Workshops

I teach a number of creative classes that encompass painting, drawing, collage and critical thinking.

I am also offering one-on-mentoring for creatives who wish to have a guiding hand navigating your way through what is at times a frustrating, but hopefully mostly a joyful journey. We can discuss your needs individually and confidentially - and these sessions can be done online as well as face to face. Please email me if you are interested.

These are outlined below:

Out of the Box Draw, Print, Paint Workshop with Steve Bolton, Celia Walker and myself.

This is a 4 day workshop where 3 artists work with you from Day 1 (drawing with Steve), to Day 2 (printmaking with Celia), to Day 3 (painting with Janet), culminating in Day 4 where we bring all of the methods together so you can take finished works home with you.

Suitable for beginners or practitioners who want to experiment with more expressive ways of working, and/or to try new media we are offering this refreshing and fun 4 day class. We provide all the materials for each of the workshop elements. Just turn up with an apron, and if you feel like it, a plate of something for a shared lunch.

After an extremely successful class in April we are holding the next one from 30 July-2 August at Studio D3, located on the 1st floor of 3 Victoria Road, Te Hau Kapua Devonport in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. The class will run from 10-4 each day. You will be making art in a creative, ‘out of the box’ atmosphere, designed to begin or extend your drawing, printmaking and painting. The cost for the four days including all materials is $575.00. Please email celiapwalker@gmail.com or drawprintpaintoutofthebox@gmail.com to confirm your interest.

A new workshop added to my teaching portfolio this year is called “Context, Concept, Critique: the Three C’s” (also referred to as ‘finding your visual voice’). This is a framework is designed to provide a bridge between a creative practice and a more thoughtful way of making your work, and will be mainly practice-led with some writing. Three days provides a rich, in-depth experience as you explore ideas through these three interconnected lenses: context, concept, and critique. You will examine how context shapes understanding, develop conceptual thinking, and apply critical analysis to evaluate ideas and outcomes. Through discussion and practical activities, the session builds skills for deeper interpretation, thoughtful decision-making, and reflective artistic practice. After this workshop you will be able to design an artist statement that reflects deeper engagement for you with your work. It is suitable for beginner to advanced and any form of creative practice. Please email me to book - janet.mazenier@gmail.com.

The next two-day Cold Wax Painting workshop will be sometime in June or July. All levels from beginner to advanced are welcome. All materials are supplied, with the cost being $280.00. Please email me if you are interested in attending this, or a future workshop - they are arranged depending on demand and more dates will be published throughout the year. Please let me know if you would like to be added to my newsletter updates - Janet.Mazenier@gmail.com.

From 30 September to 4 October I will be teaching two (concurrent) workshops at Nelson Art and You. This amazing event runs every year and provides workshops that encourage people to spend time exploring their creativity. The Masterclass is full and the second workshop is booking up quickly! Information about Cold Wax Painting - this is a genre of painting using beeswax medium (called cold wax painting/CWM) that allows you to build up layers with a fast-drying medium giving you a surface to paint, draw on, carve into and create textured surfaces.  CWM allows you to do all this and more - it is a versatile medium that, when mixed with paint or pigment can create vibrancy and patina, translucence and opacity in your work. A cold wax painting is archival; due to its unique qualities can be hung over fireplaces and (while not desired) once fully cured can hang in direct sunlight.

More information about painting with CWM can be found at this link - https://gamblincolors.com/cold-wax-painting/. Note the advice from Gamblin that while most painters use panels for CWM, it is possible to paint on stretched and unstretched canvas with the addition of certain products to retain a degree of flexibility, thus ensuring there is no cracking.
